- Description
- Historically, impairments in social cognition were inferred from performance on neuropsychological tests, such as those assessing executive function, with attention, inhibition and memory (Godfrey & Shum, 2000). However, there is convincing evidence, across multiple populations, that social cognitive impairments occur independently of general cognitive deficits (Shimokawa et al., 2000; Spikman et al., 2012). In light of this, tools are being developed across all the traditional categories of measurement including self- and informant report questionnaires, behavioural observation and performance-based tests with some being augmented with physiological measurement and neuroimaging techniques. Different aspects of social cognition lend themselves to different kinds of assessment (see Chapter 1 for a full discussion of the different facets of social cognition). For example, empathy is often assessed via self-report, or physiological measurement of changes in arousal, while emotion perception, face identity, attributional bias (e.g. attributing ambiguous events to hostile intentions) and Theory of Mind (ToM) are normally assessed with performative tasks. Despite the proliferation of measurement tool development, there is still reticence among clinicians to assess social cognitive deficits suggesting awareness of their value is yet to be recognized, and/or there are other barriers to their use (Kelly et al., 2017a; Kelly et al., 2017b). Here we discuss measurement tools and techniques, domains for assessment in different clinical conditions, and psychometric properties of various measures, as well as their utility in research and clinical practice.
